Introduction
At Redeemer Lutheran Church, we anticipate with pleasure the time when visitors, whether new or long-time members of our community, visit our household of faith to worship with us and to revitalize our community with offerings of fresh energy, new perspectives and talented leadership. Your innumerable and diverse gifts are a blessing to us all year long!
First steps
Whether you are looking for a new church home or just wanting to visit, you are very welcome at Redeemer. The first step for most people is often attending a worship service. Don't worry about what to wear; on a given Sunday you will see some people in suits and as many, or more, in jeans (men and women).
You will probably want to arrive about five to ten minutes before the service is to begin. That should give you plenty of time to find a seat near the back. (The seats in the back are the choice seats at Redeemer; we're Lutheran, you know.) If you get there much earlier, you may be asked to hand out bulletins.
You will enjoy the service. Redeemer is blessed with some extraordinary musical talent, and you will probably hear a couple of examples. Pastor Gene's and Pastor Carrie's sermons have the weakness of being so interesting that it is often difficult to get the bulletin read before they finish.
On your way out, you will probably get a chance to say Good Morning to the pastors as they shake hands with everyone on their way out. The coffee pot will be on, and we would love to have you stay and ask any member of the congregation whatever you want to know about Redeemer.
If you would like, you are invited to sit in on the adult Sunday school class in the basement. It is very informal, and the subjects deal with a wide variety of topics. It's a good opportunity to sit and visit with a few people in a relaxed and informal setting.
If you liked your experience at Redeemer, we hope that you will return. If you want to learn more, you can call the church, or ask someone to call by filling out a little card that you will find in your pew, or you can even e-mail us. Or perhaps you liked your experience but you are not ready to make a commitment yet. If so, you are welcome to come and worship with us as often as you want.
Children
Perhaps the first thing that you will notice as you sit and watch the people come into Redeemer is the large number of children in worship. From infants through high school seniors, we treasure our young people. We know that the best thing that we can do for our children is to help them to develop their relationship with God. Our time with them is short, but their time with God lasts forever.
Redeemer works hard to provide resources for our kids. In addition to weekly Sunday school classes, vacation Bible school, and confirmation classes, we offer social activities for elementary, middle school, and high school kids. Sledding, roller skating, skiing, canoe trips, camping, movies, mission trips and many other activities are provided for the children of Redeemer.
We will do our best to welcome your child or children and make them feel that they are a true member of our church family.
Fellowship
Redeemer is a congregation of friends. We like each other, and we are eager to make friends with new members. We make many excuses to get together and enjoy each other's company. Pick and choose what you like to do. Some like to play cards; 500, bridge, or both. Some like to gather for Bible study. Some gather to discuss books. And everyone loves the potluck dinners that never come often enough.
One thing that you should never do at Redeemer is to feel that you are not welcome at one of these activities. Whether you have been playing 500 for 20 years or this is your first time, show up, and your presence will be everyone's most treasured part of the evening
Opportunities to Serve
Some of us are so busy that it is all that we can do to get to Church on Sunday, and that's fine. Others have time and talents that we want to share. One of the first things that you will notice as you get to know us is that you will see members of Redeemer all over Indianola. From school involvement to Carousel Community Theater to Helping Hand to the Balloon Classic to Little League to Habitat for Humanity and on and on and on, our people are involved in the community. There are also plenty of opportunities to serve within the church, and you can pick the type of service that you like to do. Whether it is helping to mow the lawn, teaching a Sunday school class, cleaning, serving on a task force, offering musical talent, or computer skills, or writing skills or so many other areas, you will find a place to offer your talents at Redeemer. If your desire is to help the community or help to feed and care for the world's hungry, you will find those opportunities too.
Our Foundation
The foundation of Redeemer Lutheran Church is our faith in the Triune God; the Father, the Holy Spirit, and the Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that the Bible contains the inspired word of God. We also believe that we are saved through faith by the grace of God, and that all who believe and ask sincerely for forgiveness of their sins will be saved.
